When we started the GoGrid project, we wanted to push the boundaries of both front end and backend technologies. For our envisioned control panel, we were heavily influenced by Google Maps, the new Yahoo! Mail client, and other state of the art AJAX applications. We wanted to have a thick client feel in the browser. Having used various JavaScript libraries such as YUI, Dojo, and jQuery, we found them to be useful but limiting. Changing default behavior and capturing events properly is difficult and sometimes impossible. Browser quirks make HTML authoring difficult. Add differing browser DOM models and JavaScript implementations and the complexity increases exponentially. Getting an AJAX application to work in IE 7 is one thing. Getting it to work in IE 6-7, Firefox 2.0-3.0, Safari, Opera, and Konquerer is entirely different situation. The GWT allows us to code, debug, and test using strong software development best practices and produce a fast, rich, user friendly UI. When we are showcasing the UI, we often have the browser in full screen mode. Even at Web 2.0, where attendees are very tech savvy, many visitors thought the UI was a thick client!
Thanks to the GWT Team and all their hard work. You've made our lives much easier!
