Companies deploying NAS Optimization to improve server virtualization performance

As more companies adopt virtualization and cloud computing technologies, the need to ensure the virtual environments perform up to par grows in importance.

A new study by Gatepoint Research and Avere Systems found that companies are implementing network-attached storage to improve virtualization strategies. The report noted that NAS Optimization was the No. 1 priority to enhance virtualization performance, followed by NAS controller upgrades and read-only caching.

"As the adoption of virtualization technologies steadily climbs, there is an ever-increasing need to implement proven solutions to overcome the performance challenges virtualization can create," Avere Systems marketing vice president Rebecca Thompson said.

The study found that more than half of respondents plan to virtualize 50 percent of their servers by 2014, with 35 percent of businesses planning to have more than two-thirds of servers virtualized by the same time.

According to IDC, the global server virtualization market is forecast to expand at a compound annual growth rate of 14 percent through 2014. The spending on virtualization will likely continue in the coming years as more companies prepare for the advent of big data and invest in technologies capable of handling large volumes of information without compromising efficiency or security.
