Survey: Cloud storage more efficient than traditional backup

TwinStrata recently conducted a survey at the Cloud Computing Expo in New York on June 11 through 14 and found that more IT decision-makers are supporting the cloud than ever before.

The study revealed that storage environments in the cloud have been deployed more often than any other cloud strategy, including Software as a Service. Approximately 40 percent of respondents said they used remote storage because the cloud offers more effective data protection for disaster recovery plans. Another 37 percent said it was easier to backup and archive files, while 35 percent said the cloud offered more efficient services for a more affordable price.

The survey revealed that nearly three-quarters of cloud storage users said they could recover mission-critical data and applications in less than 24 hours, while 62 percent of non-cloud storage respondents could say the same. Meanwhile, more than one in eight respondents who don't use cloud storage said it takes more than a week to retrieve sensitive solutions. Fifty-seven percent of survey participants said they constantly feel like they are running out of storage space.

The adoption of the cloud also varies between companies, as extremely small firms and enterprises lead the race. Small companies, in particular, are leveraging the cloud at an increasingly rapid pace.

According to a recent study by Microsoft, the number of small organizations leveraging the cloud is forecast to triple in the next three years.

"The cloud levels the playing field for [small and medium-sized businesses], helping them compete in today's quickly changing business environment, by spending less time and money on IT and more time focused on their most important priority - growing their businesses," Microsoft executive Marco Limena said.
